QUICKNEWS #20 [July, 2010]

 

ACSED Activities

 

1.    Praise continues to come in for ACSED's June 30 Advancing Inclusion 2010 Symposium held at the Franchise Tax Board central campus. ACSED and its partners will meet in August to share thoughts on this year's event, and start planning for next year.

 

2.    Dates established for 2010-11 ACSED Board Mtgs: Aug 12, Sep 9, Oct 14, Nov 11, Dec 9, Jan 13, Feb 10, Mar 10, Apr 14, May 12, Jun 9.  Mtg location: offices of the State Council on Developmental Disabilities.  Dates/location are subject to change.

 

3.    ACSED submits letter to Interwork Institute, San Diego St, in support of California Health Incentives Improvement Project's [CHIIP] Comprehensive Employment Systems Grant application.Three ACSED Board members [Pres, Pres Emeritus & Member at Large] attend the Youth Leadership Forum [YLF] Luncheon.  ACSED member Catherine Campisi is the featured ADA Speaker & ACSED member Ralph Black recognized for YLF work.

 

4.    The Board appoints Linda Wyatt, Ed.D., as ACSED Recording Secretary for 2010-11. She is a Special Ed Consult, Dept of Ed & past Pres, Calif for Disability Rights.

 

5.    ACSED shares an info table with the Statewide Disability Advisory Council [SDAC] at the July 26 ADA 20th Anniversary Celebration, at the State Capitol. 

 

6.    ACSED Pres attended the State Personnel Board [SPB] Quarterly Forum to consider various aspects of SPB operations.

 

7.    AB 1643 Long Term Care Insur Study: Many are interested in participating in

     survey & focus groups. Contract for PT ACSED study contractor near ready.

 

8.    SB 1256 [Ed Roberts Day]: ACSED sent support ltr, Gov signs into law; ACR162 [2nd wk Oct as Disability History Week] passed & goes into effect. Two of four budget items that adversely affect IHSS program have been rescinded.

ACSED Activities

QUICKNEWS #19

 

 

1.   ACSED holds highly successful Advancing Inclusion 2010 Symposium on FTB campus. 170+ attendees hear State Controller John Chiang, State Senator Darrell Steinberg [by video], Dr. Paul Miller, Chair, Gov's Comm on Employ of Persons with Disabilities and Tony Sauer, Director, DOR.  They were followed by a series of sessions on how to survive/thrive these difficult times & how depts can improve their disability employment efforts. The day ended with a reception. Outgoing ACSED President Les Treece-Sinclair was honored for his efforts to revitalize the organization.  [Dept of Develop Services & SEIU become Sympos Supporters]

 

2.   Governor's Committee adopts ACSED's recommendation to add the Exec. Dir. of the State Council on Developmental Disabilities to its membership.  ACSED's second recommendation that ACSED be added as a member was not approved. SEIU 1000 renames its Disabled State Worker Committee the State Workers with          Disabilities Committee based on ACSED Recommendation.

 

3.   Carolyn Bonkowski, ACSED Treasurer, who is serving as the July 26 ADA Event Treasurer, continued to work closely with ADA Finance Committee. 

 

4.   AB 1643 Long Term Care Study: ACSED distributes invitation seeking participants          for study survey & focus group sessions. Still awaiting San Diego State approval of ACSED contract w CHIIP for part time contractor to work on study.

 

5.   The election for the 2010-11 ACSED Board of Directors was held, the results are: President: Jake Johnson; Vice-Pres: Pat McPartland; Treasurer: Carolyn Bonkowski; Record. Sec: Vacant; Corres. Sec: Lisa Brown; At Large: Laurie Hoirup & Robert Sifuentes; & Les Treece-Sinclair will serve as Immed Past President.

 

6.   ACSED Board approves proposed Bylaw changes adding Immediate Past President as 8th voting member of Board.   

 

7.   SB 1256 [Ed Roberts Day]: Sent ltr to Gov urging signature.  ACSED opposes 4 budget items that adversely affect IHSS; supports ACR162 [Disability History Wk].

 

8.   ACSED purchases a general liability insurance policy.

1.   ACSED Advancing Inclusion Symposium: Five of nine co-sponsors [CHIIP, DOR, SPB, APSEA and FTB] are participating in advance registration discount options. Program and agenda finalized.  State Controller John Chiang joins State Senator Darrell Steinberg [participating by video] and Dr. Paul Miller, Chair, Gov's Comm on Employment of Persons w Disabilities as speakers.  Program Book cover is finalized.  A select group of community businesses is contacted re financial support of Symposium. Tactile map of FTB facility created by Prison Industries.  ACSED pens ordered for distribution at event.  Symposium registration material is sent to all ACSED members.  San Diego State releases purchase order to ACSED to initiate flow of CHIIP funds for Symposium.  ACSED prepares invoice for reimbursement of initial Symposium expenses.

 

2.   Sharon Gerber, Symposium Coordinator, is working closely with EDD on printing of Program Book, other print items, signage, banners, event badges, etc.  Has distributed info to speakers and moderators. Developed and maintains online registration site.  Has made arrangements for videographer at Symposium.

 

3.   Carolyn Bonkowski, ACSED Treasurer, who is serving as the July 26 ADA Event Treasurer, worked closely with reps of the ADA Committee to meet accounting requirements re incoming funds.  Checking into possible need for insurance. 

 

4.   AB 1643 LTC Study: Met with researchers to finalize survey questions, and are preparing to hold focus group sessions. Still awaiting word from SDSU re approval of ACSED contract with CHIIP for part-time contractor to work on LTC study.

 

5.   The election process for the 2010-11 Board of Directors is initiated.  Nomination forms are sent to all ACSED members with a June 1 response date.

 

6.   ACSED Board approves adding Immediate Past President as 8th voting member of Board [practice used in early 1990s].  Bylaws to be changed to incorporate.   

 

7.   We continue to support SB 1256 [Ed Roberts Day], [passed Senate & in the Assembly Ed. committee]; & oppose 4 budget items that adversely affect IHSS.

QUICKNEWS #17

 

 

1.   ACSED Advancing Inclusion Symposium: Nine agencies/orgs are co-sponsoring this event on June 30.  Four of those [CHIIP, DOR, SPB & APSEA] have made cash contributions to participate in premium registration options.  Event flyer has been distributed. State Senator Darrell Steinberg and Dr. Paul Miller, Chair, Governor's Comm on Employment of Persons w Disabilities will be speakers.  

 

2.   Sharon Gerber, President, Six Degreez, Inc., began work as the Symposium Coordinator on April 13.  She has done a walk-through of FTB facilities; met with Symposium Planning Committee and ACSED Board; developed list of possible community supporters, i.e., contributors to event.

 

3.   Invited to second SPB Focus Group Mtg to consider various aspects of SPB operations.

 

4.   Carolyn Bonkowski, ACSED Treasurer [who is serving as ADA Event Treasurer] met with reps of the ADA 20th Anniversary Celebration Committee. ACSED and SDAC will share an info table at July 26 ADA activity at west end of State Capitol.

 

5.   The AB 1643 LTC Study Group has received a draft report from researchers analyzing data on past use of the CalPERS long-term care insurance program.  It is hoped this report will help to make the case for extending program to employees with disabilities.  Still awaiting word from San Diego State re approval of ACSED contract with CHIIP for part-time contractor to work on LTC study.

 

6.   Adopted legislative positions in favor of SB 1256, Ed Roberts Day [which was passed by the Senate May 3]; and in opposition to four budget items that adversely affect the In-Home Supportive Services program.

 

7.   ACSED purchased tickets to support Asian Pacific St Employees Assn Awards Dinner; Carolyn Bonkowski & Jake Johnson then attended event for ACSED.

QUICKNEWS #16

 

1.   Held several meetings of the ACSED 2010 Advancing Inclusion Training Symposium Workgroup.  The State Recruiters Roundtable has agreed to be a Symposium co-sponsor.  The event is being moved from May 26 to June 30 to avoid conflict with an advocacy event at State Capitol.  Letters have been sent to original co-sponsors offering them premium registration options. 

 

2.   Participated in SPB Focus Group Mtg which looked at various aspects of SPB operations such as civil rights, recruitment, LEAP, etc.  Problem areas were identified and prioritized.

 

3.   Applications from part-time Symposium Coordinator candidates were reviewed, the top candidates were identified and interviewed.  The Selection Committee recommended Sharon Gerber as the number one choice and the Board unanimously endorsed her selection.

 

4.   Attended meeting of the ADA 20th Anniversary Celebration Committee. ACSED  is preparing to modify the ADA/PayPal page on its website to make the PayPal function more user friendly.

 

5.   The AB 1643 LTC Study Group has received a draft report from researchers analyzing data on past use of the CalPERS long-term care insurance program.  It is hoped this report will help to make the case for extending program to employees          with disabilities.  Still awaiting word from San Diego State re approval of ACSED contract with CHIIP for part-time contractor to work on LTC study.

QUICKNEWS #15

 

 

1.     Held several meetings of the ACSED 2010 Advancing Inclusion Training Symposium Workgroup. The Governor's Comm and State Recruiters Roundtable have joined SPB, DOR, CHIIP, APSEA, EDD, SDAC and FTB [who will host the event at their facilities] as co-sponsors.  Five workgroups are now working on key areas, e.g., budget, accommodations, program, etc.  Considering moving event from May 26 to June 30 to avoid conflict with advocacy event at State Capitol.   

 

2.     Attended State as a Model Employer Mtg [DOR, SPB, CHIIP and DHCS] to review and prioritize the State as a Model Employer Action Plan and to discuss on-line disability training program for State managers.

 

3.     Met with Suzie Ambrose, SPB, and Tony Sauer, DOR, to discuss six missing key items from the State as a Model Employer Action Plan and getting them back in the document.  They agreed to put the six items back in the Plan.

 

4.     Attended meeting of the ADA 20th Anniversary Celebration Committee. ACSED  has posted information about the ADA event and a link to it on its website. ACSED has also set up a PayPal Account to receive donations for the ADA event.

 

5.     Attended February meeting of the Statewide Disability Advisory Council [SDAC] to discuss ACSED Symposium and identify possible presenters.

 

6.     The AB 1643 LTC Study Group has received a draft review of CALPERS data by the UC Berkeley researchers that gives an initial picture of how claims relate to underwriting criteria.  Still awaiting word from San Diego State re ACSED Contract with CHIIP for part-time contractor to work on LTC study.

 

7.     Board approved change to ACSED Bylaws to establish organizational members.

QUICKNEWS #14

 

1.   Held several meetings of the ACSED 2010 Advancing Inclusion Training Symposium Workgroup. The Governor's Comm has joined SPB, DOR, CHIIP, APSEA, EDD, SDAC and FTB [who will host the event at their facilities] as co-sponsors.  Five workgroups are now working on key areas, e.g., budget accommodations, program, etc. 

 

2.   ACSED made a presentation to the State Recruiters Roundtable on current activities and becoming a Symposium co-sponsor [the Roundtable indicated it should reach a decision on this next week].

 

3.   Paperwork has been submitted to CHIIP to initiate funding of one part time ACSED consultant to assist with AB 1643 Long Term Care study. 

 

4.   Gov's Comm was to consider recommendation to include bona fide State employee organization [i.e., ACSED] in the membership provisions of their Operating Procedures document [Gov's Comm requested suggested changes] at Jan 14 quarterly meeting.  Action postponed at present time.

 

5.   Suzie Ambrose, SPB, & Tony Sauer, DOR, agreed to meet with ACSED on 2-01 to discuss six missing items from the State as a Model Employer Action Plan. [Mtg went well, details next Quicknews]

 

6.   Attended meeting of the ADA 20th Anniversary Celebration Committee. ADA Committee requested ACSED to post event information on its website. ACSED awaiting receipt of ADA material to make determination. Committee also asked ACSED to set up PayPal Account to receive donations.  ACSED is looking into it.  

 

7.   Presented ACEs Employer Awards [for 2009] to the Directors of the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development [OSHPD], the number one employer of persons with disabilities for 2009, and the Department of Pesticide Regulation.

 

8.   Held an afterwork social gathering of ACSED Board Members and liaisons from agencies and other organizations at Original Pete's.
