Session Title: Leading as a Black Man with a Disability (Perspectives on Intersectionality in Employment)
Session Speaker: Eric Harris, Public Policy Director – Disability Rights California

Session Overview: To inform us during Black History Month, Eric will discuss the challenges he has faced in the world of work as an African-American with a disability and how he has advanced in his career to a position of leadership. He will explain the importance of ensuring that employers and policymakers take into account the intersection of personal differences and value the perspectives and lived experience of people who are members of the Black, disabled, Indigenous, Latinx, AAPI and/or LGBTQIA2S+ communities.

Eric will also discuss the efforts he has led as Director of Public Policy with Disability Rights California (DRC) to work closely with legislators, agencies and departments, and the Governor’s administration to ensure that disabled people have greater employment opportunities and all of the services that they need to perform their jobs. This includes legislation ensuring competitive wages for all disabled workers, strengthening enforcement of protections for employees with disabilities in state service, and improvements in the Limited Examination and Appointment Program.

Join us and learn more about Eric’s compelling story.

About the Speaker: Eric Harris is DRC’s Public Policy Director with an extensive career working closely with disability leaders, community members, and elected officials throughout the country to produce change for the disability community.

Eric brings significant political, federal, and state policy experience, having worked for Congresswoman Barbara Lee, the Democratic National Committee, and the NAACP of California.

He started his time at DRC almost two years ago, working in legislation and strategic partnerships, and community engagement. He is a member of the State Independent Living Council as a Governor Newsom appointee and a board member of the Resources for Independent Living in Sacramento. He grew up in Sacramento, California, and was an elite wheelchair basketball player.
