Session Title: Ethical Leadership and Self Advocacy – Why Representation Matters and Ways to Lead in Today’s World
Session Speaker: Mary Zendejas, Member, Long Beach City Council

Session Overview: In recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), we invite you to an exciting and inspiring session to learn about successful strategies to advocate for yourself, your community and your core beliefs. Councilwoman Zendejas will impart her knowledge and insight about how to embody ethical leadership in today’s world. She will discuss how being a self-advocate for your own issues can be a catalyst and asset to being a leader for positive change for ALL. She will talk about the intersectionality of all differences and provide ideas on how you can become a leader in your community. She will also share the story of her own journey to becoming the first Latina wheelchair user elected to political office in the nation.

About the Speaker: Mary Zendejas was the first Latina wheelchair user to be elected to public office in the nation. She was sworn in as a member of the Long Beach City Council in December 2019.

She has never met a challenge she couldn’t tackle. She states her passion for living and working hard is rooted in seeing her parents, a field hand and factory worker, provide their children a better life. Mary, a polio survivor and wheelchair user was the first in her family to graduate from college.

Her advocacy dates back nearly three decades starting in high school, where she organized citizenship fairs to help community members follow their American Dream of becoming US citizens. She is also the founder of Professional Abilities Association of America, an organization created for working professionals with disabilities by working professionals with disabilities, focusing on inclusion in the workforce. Additionally, she is a two-time graduate of Leadership Long Beach, served as a member of Mayor Robert Garcia’s Transition Team, is a former board member of Housing Long Beach and is a past Ms. Wheelchair California.

Mary’s work has been widely recognized. She has received several awards including the American Women’s Business Association’s Diamond in the Sky award, The California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ) Gene Lentzner Human Relations Award, the Teachers Association of Long Beach (TALB) Human Rights Award, Patrick O’Donnell’s “Women of Distinction” Award and The Long Beach Post “40 under 40” Award, to name a few.
