Session Title: Supporting Neurodivergent State Workers: Creating a Culture of Understanding and Workplace Inclusion
Session Speaker: In recognition of Autism Awareness Month our speakers will be Dr. Lauren Libero, Autism Specialist and Matt Harmetz, Community Liaison, both of whom work for the Autism Services Branch at the California Department of Developmental Services (DDS).

Session Overview: Join us for an informative and practical session designed to strengthen workplace inclusion. Our speakers will share insights on how to create a work environment where autistic and neurodivergent employees feel supported, valued, and empowered to thrive. Discover how you can build awareness, become an informed ally, and help reduce stigma—contributing to a state workforce where every team member truly belongs. The session will also suggest strategies individuals with autism can use to take advantage of their strengths and seek the accommodations they may need to excel as employees.

About the Speaker: Dr. Lauren Libero oversees the Autism Services Branch and programs and services for autistic individuals across the lifespan. Her work leverages data and research related to autism and the lived experiences of the autism community to develop and implement statewide policy in the provision of effective, quality, and equitable services and supports for individuals and their families statewide. Lauren is also a Governor’s appointee to the state’s Advisory Council on Improving Interactions Between People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Law Enforcement. Prior to her work at DDS, Lauren was a UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the UC Davis MIND Institute. She has also served the disability community for over 20 years through various volunteer and non-profit programs, including leading a social support group for autistic women.

Matt Harmetz is a neurodivergent individual with more than six years of experience working directly with I/DD individuals, particularly autistics. Matt ‘s work at DDS primarily revolves around community engagement and includes coordinating a statewide Autism Focus Group. He also serves on the CAPTAIN Leadership Team whose mission is to promote acceptance, support, and quality of life for individuals on the autism spectrum by using Evidence Based Practices. Prior to working for DDS, Matt worked as an Associate Governmental Program Analyst (AGPA) for the State Treasurer’s Office , California Achieving a Better Life Experience (CalABLE) program. Before entering state service, Matt worked as a direct support professional for Meristem, a regional center vendor. He’s also done work administering training to companies wanting to learn how to hire and work with autistic individuals.
