LEAP Focused Job Fair Initiative: Over the past several months, ACSED has been actively pursuing a number of initiatives to create additional employment opportunities, and to build a better work environment, for people with disabilities within California State Government. During this period, ACSED has been collaborating with CalHR, DOR, SDAC and Sacramento Works to put on a multi-part LEAP oriented employment fair.

This event is scheduled to occur on three consecutive Wednesdays including: May 18, May 25 and June 1. It will feature an orientation to the State’s hiring process and the LEAP program, a LEAP certification component, disability awareness training for State managers and supervisors, and a job fair that will hopefully result in a number of employment offers to qualified candidates with disabilities. Additional information about this event, including the registration links, can be found on the ACSED website:

Legislative Activities: ACSED has been quite active in the 2022 legislative session. Its legislative committee has identified, tracked and recommended a number of bills to the Board for an official position. ACSED is thus far supporting five bills including: AB 1604, AB 1947, AB 1990, AB 2164 and AB 2394. Committee members have also prepared and provided testimony to the relevant budget subcommittees on a part of the Governor’s California Leads initiative that would allocate more than forty positions to CalHR, including some staff that would work on improving employment opportunities for people with disabilities in State Service.

ACSED is also working to engage with CalHR leadership to ensure the appropriate implementation of the AB 313 legislation enacted last year. A significant part of this process will involve reviewing and commenting on the model reasonable accommodation policy required by AB 313 prior to its release to state departments. The model policy will provide guidance to departments on the development of their departmental policies, as required by AB 313.

CalHR has provided assurances the policy will be shared with ACSED prior to its release to departments. If you are interested in being a part of the review process, please provide your contact information to Scott Richmond at scottrichmond123@yahoo.com.

ACSED Member Appointed to Judgeship: We are pleased to report that one of our members, Andi Mudryk, has been appointed by Governor Newsom to a judgeship on the Sacramento County Superior Court. Andi has been a member of ACSED since 2018.

She obtained her Juris Doctorate from George Washington University Law School, and has had a long and distinguished career advocating for the rights of people with disabilities. Since 2002, she has held high ranking positions at the Arizona Center for Disability Law, Disability Rights California, Disability Rights Advocates, and Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County. For the past four years, she served as both the Chief Legal Counsel and Chief Deputy Director for the Department of Rehabilitation.

Andi is one of only a very few people with a significant disability to be appointed to a judgeship on the superior courts. We wish her the very best as she embarks on this latest chapter of her legal career.

ASSISTANT TREASURER POSITION:
As mentioned in the previous member update, ACSED is looking for a person interested in serving as its Assistant Treasurer. This is an appointed, unpaid position, but offers an opportunity for someone to gain experience with the financial and reporting procedures associated with the management of a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. If you or someone you know might have an interest in exploring this opportunity, Contact Ralph Black at ralphdblack@att.net or by telephone at (916) 531-6460.

Regards,
Scott Richmond, President.
